Then it disappeared. Then someone else made areyoufriendswithdavid.xyz. Then that one disappeared too. Here's what happened, and where the idea lives now.

Short answer

The original: areyoufriendswithdavid.com

The first version was built by @ImATeapot418 (also known as Kyle on Roblox, @rbxXlXi on Twitter/X) sometime around 2020-2021. The site did exactly one thing — check your degrees of separation from David Baszucki — and it did it well. The site went somewhat viral in the Roblox community for a while and racked up significant daily traffic.

Like a lot of indie hobbyist sites, it was a free passion project. It ran on volunteer hosting that the author was paying for out of pocket. At some point in 2024, the site stopped responding. The domain expired shortly after. There was never an announcement post; it just went quiet.

Common stuff: free hosting bills add up, the Roblox API rate limits get more aggressive, traffic spikes during viral periods overwhelm cheap infrastructure, the author moves on to other projects. Nothing dramatic, just attrition.

The successor: areyoufriendswithdavid.xyz

After the .com went down, @danodanya12Beta21 picked up the idea and launched areyoufriendswithdavid.xyz. Same basic concept, slightly different implementation. It ran for several months and served a chunk of the people coming in from the now-broken .com URL.

This one also went offline. Same pattern — running an API-heavy social-graph search for a community of any size eats hosting resources fast, and free-tier services aren't quite up to it. The .xyz version is also now gone.

The Roblox-game versions

Around the same time the websites were running, several Roblox-game versions of the same concept appeared:

Shareable links — once you've found your path, you can share a permanent URL of the result without anyone else having to re-run the search
UK workaround — built-in guidance for users affected by the UK Online Safety Act friend-list restrictions (see our post on this)
Public API — anyone can build their own tools using the FriendPath endpoint without scraping (API docs and examples)
Mutual friend detection, friend overlap %, account age timeline, and other features
