Roblox Friend Cap Raised to 1,000: What Changed (and How to Hit It)

For 17 years, every Roblox account could have at most 200 friends. The cap was inherited from the platform's early "this should feel small enough to feel personal" design. In November 2024, Roblox announced they were finally raising it — and by mid-2025 the full 1,000-connection cap was live for everyone globally.
Short answer
The Roblox friend cap was 200 from 2007 through November 2024, then raised in phases: 250 → 500 → 1,000 throughout 2025. By 2026 every account globally can have up to 1,000 connections. The block-list cap was raised in parallel. Per Bloxy News's reporting on the announcement.

The rollout timeline

Why this took 17 years

The 200 cap predates most modern social platforms. Roblox was built when Facebook had a 5,000-friend cap, MySpace had no cap, and the prevailing assumption was that a friends list should map roughly to "people you actually know." Raising the cap to 1,000 is partly a UX update for the platform's increased usage by older creators (who friend other creators in volume), partly a competitive move toward LinkedIn-style networks, and partly just removing a long-standing infrastructure-vintage constraint.

What this means for friend-graph tools

For tools like FriendPath that traverse the social graph in real time, the cap raise has two effects:

How to actually hit 1,000 friends

If you're trying to fill your connections list, here's what works in practice:

Don't buy or trade fake-friendship from sketchy services. Roblox has historically banned accounts caught in bulk friend-spam patterns.

The "Connections" rebrand

Alongside the cap raise, Roblox rebranded "Friends" to "Connections." Functionally identical — same mutual-acceptance flow, same APIs, same friend-list endpoint — but the UI label and some documentation now use the word "Connections." This reflects the platform's shift toward a less-personal, more LinkedIn-style social model where 1,000 connections is a normal-ish number rather than a creepy outlier.

Developers note: Player:GetFriendsAsync() and Player:IsFriendsWith() were NOT renamed. Existing code keeps working. Read more in our IsFriendsWith post.

Other 2025-2026 changes worth knowing

The cap raise was part of a broader package of changes: mandatory age verification for chat (January 2026), new Roblox Kids and Roblox Select account types (June 2026), stricter developer requirements (May 19, 2026). Full breakdown in our Roblox 2026 changes post.

Quick FAQ

What is FriendPath?

FriendPath is a free web tool that finds the shortest chain of friends between any two Roblox accounts using bidirectional breadth-first search over Roblox's public friends API. Runs in your browser, no install, no Roblox login required.

What does "degrees of separation" mean on Roblox?

It's the number of friend links between two accounts. If you're friends with someone who's friends with David Baszucki, you are 2 degrees of separation from David Baszucki. Most active Roblox players are within 3–5 hops of any famous account.

Is FriendPath free?

Yes. The web tool at friendpath.arbastro.com is 100% free, ad-supported. The public API offers 50 free calls per day with paid tiers beyond. See the API docs for details.

Does FriendPath work with banned or terminated accounts?

Yes — Roblox's friends API still returns friend lists for banned/terminated accounts, so FriendPath can traverse through them. The path is computed on the public friend graph, not on a player's active session.
